Celebrate being African with Lira at the Bassline Fest 25 May 2024

Events

Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963.  It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world. The organization was transformed into the African Union on 9 July 2002, in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May.

What does it mean to say I am African?

Being African can mean many different things, as the continent of Africa is home to a diverse population with a wide variety of cultures, languages and experiences. Being African is to share the continent’s history, victories, challenges, landscapes and vibrancies.

Who can forget This speech given by the former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki‘s, delivered on the occasion of the adoption of South Africa’s democratic Constitution, and was inherent to the larger quest to (re)imagine South Africa and (South)Africanness and assert independent Black intellectual thought, and celebrates the South African (and African) people’s past, present, and future
