Now celebrating eleven years, this iconic lifestyle and culture festival once again invites South Africans and global travellers to experience the true spirit of township living through food, fashion, art, music, tourism, and entrepreneurship.
And this year, the theme says it all: Welcome Home.

“Makhelwane,” a Zulu word meaning neighbour, is more than geography, it’s belonging. It’s the warmth of community, the shared joy of creativity, and the pride that pours out of Soweto’s streets.
As South Africans continue to navigate global challenges, Makhelwane is extending an open invitation: travel locally, rediscover home, and support the small businesses and young innovators who keep township culture thriving.
Across three immersive days, festivalgoers can expect a vibrant celebration of entrepreneurship, creativity, and community spirit all anchored in the heart of Orlando West.
What to Expect at Makhelwane Festival 2025
Opening Night: 12 December — Thesis Concept Store
The festival kicks off with The Art of Starting: Retla Bona Ko Pele, an inspiring evening centred on entrepreneurship, resilience, and community growth. Guests will hear from respected thought leaders like Therisho Sebesho, Siba Ncube, and Lebo, sharing insights for emerging creatives ready to build and grow.
The night flows into a warm welcome of live music and DJ sets, setting the tone for a weekend of celebration.
Festival Days: 13 & 14 December — Poka Street, Orlando West
Live Music & DJs
Over two unforgettable days, Soweto’s soundtrack comes alive with performances by: Sjava, Monique Bingham, Njelic, Russell Zuma, WAV Gardn, Thandonje, Saul Madiope, and more.
On the decks, expect sets from: Musical Maestro, Nicky B, Ke Dineo, Kitchen Mess, Buhle Mbongwa, DJ Jawz, Billion, Tee Illa, Lochive, plus more acts still to be announced.
Street Art Exhibition
Curated in partnership with The Arts Company Soweto (TACS), this exhibition showcases emerging township artists and connects them with new audiences, buyers, and collectors.
The Makers Market
A celebration of local creativity from hand-made goods to entrepreneurial start-ups. With support from Gauteng DSACR, Gauteng Tourism Authority, and Joburg Tourism, participating SMMEs get free showcasing opportunities, giving township businesses the exposure they deserve.
The Lemonade Stand (Kiddies Market)
A heart-melting favourite: the kiddies’ entrepreneurial zone for children 15 and under. Young creators run their own stalls, enjoy workshops, storytelling sessions, games, and guided creative play inspiring the next generation of business owners.
Food, Drinks & Lifestyle
Get ready for gourmet street eats, local flavours, art activations, bike and tuk-tuk tours, fashion pop-ups, live neighbourhood storytelling, and a festive, family-friendly atmosphere that captures the true soul of Soweto.
