Once in Joburg has brought the concept of the ‘poshtel’ into inner city Joburg. Situated in The Grove, in the heart of Braamfontein, Once in Joburg merges urban chic, value for money accommodation and the sociability of hostel culture to the student hub of Jozi.
According to Lonely Planet a ‘poshtel’ is as “an upscale or luxury hostel – combining the style and comfort of a boutique hotel with the price and sensibilities of a hostel.” This is no dingy shared room crammed full of bunk beds – poshtels cater to the millennial traveller looking for value, yet unique places to stay where they are immersed in the local culture.
The poshtel, part of the Once Youth Hotels group, is ideal for travellers (and locals) looking to explore the cultural and youth hub of Joburg. Centrally located in student (and NGO) central, with great accessibility to the Citysightseeing bus, the poshtel is ideally located to explore Jozi’s heritage and arts scene.
As a Joburg local, Braamfontein is one of the spaces I love hanging out in. It’s diverse, woke and on the pulse of the Jozi vibes. Their sister hostel, Once in Cape Town has recently achieved it’s Fair Trade Tourism certification while Once in Joburg’s certification is currently in process.
Kim Whitaker, co-founder of Once Youth Hotels says “Once in Cape Town was founded (alongside the in-house bar and terrace Yours Truly) in 2013 in Kloof street, Cape Town, and is a vibrant youth hub for travelers and locals. When the opportunity arose to open in Braamfontein in 2016, we knew it was the place to be – easily accessible with the Gautrain, close to Wits University and in the hub of Johannesburg’s art and cultural revival precinct. At any Once Youth Hotels property it is all about creating that memorable and truly African “Once in a Lifetime” experience.”
What impresses me most about this “All Star Hostel” is that it manages to combine the comforts of a hotel with the fun atmosphere of a hostel.
The rooms are modern, with flat-screen TVs and funky décor. With prices ranging from R210 per person per night for a 4-bed en-suite shared dorm (either mixed or female only) to R750 per room for an en-suite double or twin, complete with free breakfast, Wifi and off-street parking you’d be hard pressed to find better value in the city. They offer a range of tours and activities, from free city walking tours to bicycle tours
