(In)Visible returns to launch cross-border tour

Events Life Style Local

The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC), #FATC30, announce the return of (In)Visible, a powerful choreographic work by Mozambican artist Janeth Mulapha, which begins a cross-border tour in October 2025. The work first premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2024 as part of its acclaimed 3rd Space programme and after further development, returns to the opening  on 4 October 2025 at 18:30 at FATC’s home base, Ebhudlweni Arts Centre in Emakhazeni, Mpumalanga.

(In)Visible is a bold and provocative dance theatre performance that interrogates what it means to see—and what it means to be unseen. Developed in collaboration with scenographer Jenni-lee Crewe and informed by  Mulapha’s direct engagement with individuals in Mozambique who have experienced sudden blindness, the work transcends the physical condition to explore deeper forms of invisibility. It confronts themes of neglect, distortion, exclusion and the ways in which society erases or overlooks bodies, identities, and truths that challenge dominant narratives.

Using a powerful blend of choreography, repetition, breath, and sound, (In)Visible dissolves the barrier between what is seen and what is felt. The performers stumble, resist, repeat, and reclaim space—turning the stage into a terrain of recognition. At its core, the work asks urgent questions about who we choose to acknowledge, and who we render invisible. The result is an evocative stage experience that compels the audience to confront their own perceptions and complicity in seeing—or not seeing—the world around them.

Says PJ Sabbagha, Managing & Artistic Director of FATC, “(In)Visible is a work of deep listening and radical clarity. It asks us to look again at what is often ignored, and it does so with great artistic intelligence and emotional force. We’re proud to support its continued life, and to launch the tour here in Emakhazeni, where our organisation has worked for a decade to build access to powerful, socially engaged performance in rural spaces.”

The production brings together a seasoned and diverse creative team, including South African scenographer Jenni-Lee Crewe, and lighting and stage managers Pumeza Damane and Awande Dube. The cast features Promise Cindy Magopa, Nicholas Aphane, Promise Mosoma, and Kaldi Makutike—each of whom brings a unique voice, physical vocabulary and personal history to this complex and affecting piece. Each body on stage serves as a living archive of the politics of visibility. For dancer Promise Mosoma, a former participant in FATC’s youth training programme in rural Mpumalanga, the production also marks her professional debut.

The tour continues with performances at the Maitisong Festival in Gaborone, Botswana, on 8 and 9 October 2025, 11th October at POPART in Johannesburg and finally the 11th Edition of KINANI – international platform for contemporary dance in Maputo, Mozambique between 24th and 30th November 2025.

During the visit to Maitisong, alongside the production, Mulapha will facilitate a participatory masterclass titled “What the Body Sees When the Eyes Are Closed”. Designed for adult participants (18+), the session offers an embodied exploration of perception and memory through blindfolded movement, breathwork, ancestral song, and repetition. The masterclass draws directly from the choreographic methodologies used in (In)Visible and invites dancers and non-dancers alike to ask: What has my body not yet danced?

The 2025 tour of (In)Visible is presented with the support of the Ambassade de France en Afrique du Sud, au Lesotho et au Malawi, Institut Français, Alliance Française Gaborone, Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation, Maitisong Festival, KINANI, POPART and The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

FATC is a not-for-profit organisation based in rural Emakhazeni, Mpumalanga. Founded in 1995, over the past three decades, it has developed a nationally significant model for youth development through dance and theatre, with a focus on access, inclusion, and social justice. FATC’s work bridges the gap between rural communities and national/international artistic opportunities, positioning creativity as both a personal and societal tool for transformation.

Performances of (In)Visible will take place at the Ebhudlweni Arts Centre on 4 October 2025, and at the Maitisong Festival on 8th October open to the public and 9th October a schools focused performance.
