Getting around Joburg for visitors can be confusing. However this fast paced city of ours need not be.
Gautrain
The Gautrainrapid train service links Joburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International airport. The main line starts at Park Station (Braamfontein) stopping at Rosebank, Sandton, Malboro, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria central and Hatfield. You can connect to the airport line via Sandton or Malboro stations. The Gautrain bus networks links stations to nearby suburbs. Buy a Gautrain Gold Card at the Gautrain stations and load it with a minimum of R25 credit.
If you have a smartphone UBER or TAXIFY ride-hailing apps are probably the most familiar options to you. First time users can use the Uber code 6bs8f on Uber to get R50 off their first ride or MZANSIGIRL on Taxify to get R150 off their first ride.
Metered Taxis
Prices can vary so, we’d recommend you get an idea of pricing before getting in.
Joburg’s most popular mode of transport for local residents are minibus taxis, but they are not easy to navigate as a tourist. Mini Bus Taxis are best used with a resident from the city.
Car Rental
On the whole Joburg can be a maze to navigate as a newbie relying on public transport alone. Hiring a car is generally your best option if you feel confident handling the city’s roads.
