Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival 2025: Creativity, Culture & The Sounds of Freedom

Events

Johannesburg’s most anticipated creative celebration is back! Constitution Hill’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival returns with a powerful line-up of music, fashion, and culture – and this year promises to be bigger than ever.

After kicking off Youth Month with The Creative Conference (26–28 June 2025), Basha is keeping the fire burning with a double treat for fans. Mark your calendars: the iconic Sounds of Freedom Music Festival lands on 13 September 2025, bringing pure summer energy to the city.

A Celebration of Creative Expression

The theme for 2025 is “Celebrating The Legacy of Creative Expression” – a tribute to youth creativity and its role in shaping society. From thought-provoking dialogue at the Creative Conference to electrifying performances on stage, Basha Uhuru continues to spotlight the next generation of changemakers in South Africa’s creative economy.

And as always, the festival remains true to its mission: providing a platform for fresh talent and local superstars alike.

A Full-Day Festival Experience

The doors open at 10h00, with live performances, a Curated Makers Market, and vibrant cultural activations. At 18h00, history will be made as Basha presents its first-ever fashion show in collaboration with the Sophie Ndaba Fashion Hub.

This spectacular showcase will bring together emerging designers, global-local icons, and the sounds of designer/DJ Maria McCloy, creating a Fashion Meets Music fusion like never before.

Founded in June 2025, the SN Fashion Hub empowers South African design talent through mentorship, business development, and world-class showcases. “This is more than a fashion show – it’s a celebration of creativity, culture, and collaboration,” says founder Sophie Ndaba.

Why Basha Matters

Since its founding in 2012, the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival has honoured the legacy of the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising – giving today’s youth the freedom to explore their creativity and express themselves.

As a flagship creative arts festival, Basha has become a space for learning, inspiration, skill-sharing, networking, and innovation. Its ethos is firmly rooted in youth development and supporting South Africa’s creative economy.

Backed by strong partners including the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, City of Johannesburg’s Arts Alive Program, Johannesburg Tourism, Gauteng Tourism, and the Gautrain Management Agency, Basha continues to grow as one of Gauteng’s most powerful cultural platforms.

Don’t Miss It!

As Constitution Hill CEO Leah Mabusela puts it:
“We are proud to be a museum that prioritises contributing to community and creativity through the Basha Uhuru Festival. The Sounds of Freedom Concert brings rising stars to the stage and delivers some of Mzansi’s biggest artists for the 2025 edition.
