Day 1 – 28 December:
Transfer from the airport (or any point of arrival in Johannesburg) directly to Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers. On arrival meet our friendly team and take a mini-tour of the hostel and get to know the community around us. Have a drink in our ‘Beach style’ bar, relax in our community park and make yourself at home. At 5:30pm we will embark on a Tuk Tuk sunset cruise that will take you for a sun-downer craft beer at the local micro-brewery – Soweto Gold. Cruise along the famous Vilakazi Street and take in the cool vibe of the township. Back at Lebo’s at 7pm, dinner will be served at our Outdoor Restaurant. Enjoy the rest of the evening with other guests and locals all joining together around the fire.
Day 2 – 29 December
Join in for a breakfast buffet to get the right energy needed to explore Soweto by bike! The cycle tour will start at 10am and will take you around Soweto for 4 hours on a nice ‘leisury’ ride cruising the famous and vibrant streets of this township. As we cycle, our guide will make several stops throughout the route to point out historical landmarks, famous neighbourhoods, as well as talking about today’s culture and current affairs. Stop at a food stall and taste some of the local street food and wash it all down with a drink at the shebeen. After taking it all in, park your bike back at Lebo’s and enjoy a home cooked lunch in the park. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing, walking around the community – or if you’d like to pedal some more – take up on our free bike rental offer and cycle to some of the sights you would like to spend more time at.
Your evening activity will be at your choice – a dinner at Vilakazi street, a performance at the Soweto theatre or an outing to one of the local clubs or pubs – we will advise you on what’s on! This evening is at your own cost!
Day 3, 30 December
Breakfast and check out and get ready for Afropunk! Our shuttle will take you to Braamfontein and Once in Joburg – an All Star hostel in the vibrant cultural and student hub of Johannesburg. Here you will be treated in true ‘poshtel’ style with accommodation in spacious dormitories or private rooms – all rooms are en-suite. Once in Joburg is famous for their friendly staff ready to recommend you the various experiences on offer to discover the inner-city.
Day 3 and 4 30-31st December
Afropunk and overnight at Once in Joburg.
Day 5 1st January
Back to Soweto! The festivities are not over – after getting enough rest after the two explosive Afropunk days – Soweto is the perfect place to be to celebrate the first day of the year. There is always a great vibe in our township on New Year’s Day, and this time we will be hosting a special picnic with the Locrate Market – famous for their monthly lifestyle markets in Soweto. On the green lawns and in the shade of the trees in our Community Park we will be having the picnic blankets and baskets ready. Our Outdoor Restaurant ready to serve a variety of food, cocktails in the bar and nice tunes from the DJ. A perfect relaxed day in great company!
Day 6 2nd January
Time to leave the City of Gold – after breakfast and check out we will drop you off at the Airport or any other departure point in Johannesburg.
